Weekly Volcanic Activity Map

The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is a cooperative project between the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program and the US Geological Survey's Volcano Hazards Program. Updated by 2300 UTC every Wednesday and averaging 16 reported volcanoes, this is not a comprehensive list of all eruptions this week, but rather a summary of activity that meet criteria discussed in the "Criteria and Disclaimers" section below.

Volcanic activity reported here is preliminary and subject to change. Carefully reviewed, detailed narratives over longer time periods are published as reports of the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network available through volcano profile pages.

The RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed is identical to the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report minus some features including the header information (latitude and longitude and summit elevation), the Geologic Summary, and a link to the volcano's page from the Global Volcanism Program. At the end of each report is a list of the sources used. Each volcano report includes a link from the volcano's name back to the more complete information in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report on the Smithsonian website. This feature was first made available on 5 March 2008.

A Google Earth network link for the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report can be loaded into the free Google Earth software, and in turn will load placemarks for volcanoes in the current weekly report. Placemark balloons include the volcano name, report date, report text, sources, and links back to the GVP volcano profile page and to the complete Weekly Report for that week. This feature was first made available on 1 April 2009.

Criteria



The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report does not necessarily include all volcanic activity that occurred on Earth during the week. More than a dozen volcanoes globally have displayed more-or-less continuous eruptive activity for decades or longer, and such routine activity is typically not reported here. Moreover, Earth's sea-floor volcanism is seldom reported even though in theory it represents the single most prolific source of erupted material. The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report summarizes volcanic activity that meets one or more of the following criteria:

- A volcano observatory raises or lowers the alert level at the volcano.
- A volcanic ash advisory has been released by a volcanic ash advisory center (VAAC) stating that an ash cloud has been produced from the volcano.
- A verifiable news report of new activity or a change in activity at the volcano has been issued.
- Observers have reported a significant change in volcanic activity. Such activity can include, but is not restricted to, pyroclastic flows, lahars, lava flows, dome collapse, or increased unrest.

Volcanoes are included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section of the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report if the activity occurs after at least 3 months of quiescence. Once a volcano is included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section, updates will remain in that section unless the activity continues for more than 1 month without escalating, after which time updates will be listed in the "Continuing Activity" section. Volcanoes are also included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section if the volcano is undergoing a period of relatively high unrest, or increasing unrest. This is commonly equal to Alert Level Orange on a scale of Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, where Red is the highest alert. Or alert level 3 on a scale of 1-4 or 1-5.

It is important to note that volcanic activity meeting one or more of these criteria may occur during the week, but may not be included in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report because we did not receive a report.

1. The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is intended to provide timely information about global volcanism on a weekly basis. Consequently, the report is generated rapidly by summarizing volcanic reports from various sources, with little time for fact checking. The accuracy of the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is dependent upon the quality of the volcanic activity reports we receive. Reports published in the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network are cover longer time periods and are more carefully reviewed, although all of the volcanoes discussed in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report are not necessarily reported in the Bulletin. Because of our emphasis on rapid reporting on the web we have avoided diacritical marks. Reports are updated on the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report web page as they are received, therefore information may be included regarding events that occurred before the current report period.

2. Rapidly developing events lead to coverage that is often fragmentary. Volcanoes, their eruptions, and their plumes and associated atmospheric effects are complex phenomena that may require months to years of data analysis in order to create a comprehensive summary and interpretation of events.

3. Preliminary accounts sometimes contain exaggerations and "false alarms," and accordingly, this report may include some events ultimately found to be erroneous or misleading.

4. Many news agencies do not archive the articles they post on the Internet, and therefore the links to some sources may not be active. To obtain information about the cited articles that are no longer available on the Internet contact the source.

Report for Piton de la Fournaise
An eruption began at Piton de la Fournaise on 30 May around 1155 at Dolomieu crater in the area where the December 2002 collapse occurred. The eruption was preceded by a slight increase in seismicity on 28 May, which included a small seismic swarm. Another swarm took place on the morning of 30 May, and at 1155 tremor began beneath Dolomieu crater. Then the eruption began, producing a lava flow that reached a length of ~400 m and a width of 250 m in the western part of Dolomieu crater. In addition, lava fountaining was observed until ~1400, after which most surface activity ceased. By 1 June at 1000 no tremor was recorded, marking the end of the eruption.

Report for Anatahan
Emissions of ash and gas at Anatahan, which began on 10 May, continued during 28 May to 3 June. During most of the report week, eruption clouds rose to heights around 3 km a.s.l. Based on a report from an aircraft, the Washington VAAC stated that ash from a fairly vigorous eruption on 31 May around 1025 rose to ~7.6 km a.s.l. By 2202 there were reports of ash to ~ 6 km a.s.l. The TOMS Volcanic Emissions Group reported detecting significant SO2 emissions from Anatahan during 10-30 May, although data gaps prevented measurements on some days.

Report for Chikurachki
The eruption that began at Chikurachki on 18 April continued during 23-28 May. Ash from an eruption began to fall on the Shelekhov settlement on 27 May at 1800. Ash plumes rose ~1 km above the volcano and drifted NE. Plumes were occasionally visible on satellite imagery. Chikurachki remained at Concern Color Code Orange.

Report for Colima
Based on information from the México City MWO, the Washington VAAC reported an emission from Colima on 27 May at 2014. The resultant plume rose to ~6 km a.s.l. No ash was visible on satellite imagery.

Report for Karangetang
Satellite imagery showed a low-level plume extending NE from Karangetang on 30 May at 0646.

Report for Kilauea
During 27 May to 2 June, lava continued to flow down Kilauea's SE flank, with surface lava flows occasionally visible on the coastal flat and upslope at Pulama pali, and Paliuli. Small amounts of lava continued to flow into the sea at Highcastle beach. A fire started by lava flows the previous week continued to burn W of the flow field. Seismicity at Kilauea's summit was at moderate-to-high levels around 1 June, with many small, low-frequency earthquakes occurring at shallow depths beneath the summit caldera. There were small episodes of inflation and deflation during the report period.

Report for Klyuchevskoy
Volcanic unrest continued at Kliuchevskoi during 23-30 May. Seismicity was above background levels and the amount of continuous spasmodic volcanic tremor slightly increased. Shallow earthquakes and others at depths around 30 km continued to occur. Gas-and-steam plumes were occasionally visible, but the volcano was obscured by clouds most of the report week. On 30 May at 0030 observers in the town of Klyuchi saw pulsing glow above the volcano's crater. Light bursts occurred every 1-10 minutes, but volcanic bomb traces were absent. Kliuchevskoi remained at Concern Color Code Orange.

Report for Manam
Occasional emissions of thin white-gray ash plumes occurred from Manam's Main Crater during 13-27 May. Ashfall was seen on the NW side of the island during 17-19 and 23 May. There were no precursors to this activity; no noises were heard and no incandescence was seen. During the report period, small amounts of thin white vapor were emitted from Southern Crater.

Report for Semeru
Plumes emitted from Semeru were visible on satellite imagery at a height of ~6 km a.s.l. on 29 May at 0838 drifting NW, and on 2 June at 0625 drifting SSE.

Report for Soufriere Hills
Volcanic activity at Soufrière Hills decreased slightly during 23-30 May. Most activity was focused on the lava dome's ENE flank, producing rockfalls and numerous pyroclastic flows along the N side of the Tar River Valley and occasionally in White's and Tuitt's ghauts. Rockfalls and small pyroclastic flows also spilled off the lava dome's northern flanks onto Farrell's Plain. The lava dome began to grow more centrally, building vertically upwards and accumulating debris on the summit region. The sulfur dioxide emission rate was approximately average at the beginning of the week, but increased towards the middle of the week. Small low-level ash plumes were occasionally visible on satellite imagery.

Report for Ulawun
During 12-27 May, Ulawun's main summit crater continued to emit weak-to-moderate volumes of white vapor and the N valley vent was quiet with no emissions observed. A slight increase in seismicity occurred during 18-23 May. According to the Darwin VAAC, on 1 June at 0925 a thin, low-level plume was observed on satellite imagery. By 1325 it was no longer visible.

Report for Witori
An aerial inspection of Pago's summit area on 22 May revealed that lava effusion from the northwestern-most vent had ceased following the last aerial inspection in February 2003. Also, there were no indications of fresh lava near the vents. This observation was confirmed by the lack of further movement of the northerly and southerly lobes of lava. Furthermore, there was no change in the height of the lava body against the caldera wall. Scientists also saw that a new fumarole area had formed between Mt. Pago and the Pyramid to the east. Significant inflation had been measured since December 2002, but it may be related to roadwork in the area causing benchmarks to move.
