What was erupting in the year...?

Statistics for volcanoes and recorded eruptions since 1960; data for 2024 is through the last data update (16 August 2024). Click on each year for the full list of volcanoes and additional details for that year (opens a new tab). Total eruptions counts activity that took place during any (or all) of that year. Eruptions that started as new activity are included in the total eruptions count. Data subject to change or correction due to ongoing research. Columns showing the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) values reflect the maximum VEI for the overall eruption and are assigned to the year in which the eruption started. The "Has volcanic activity been increasing?" page provides further analysis of this data; our primary conclusion is that overall volcanism has not increased, but that the apparent rise is due to reporting bias issues, where recent improvements in communication and technology (especially satellites) have allowed observation of low-level activity that went unrecorded in the past.
