Weekly Volcanic Activity Map

The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is a cooperative project between the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program and the US Geological Survey's Volcano Hazards Program. Updated by 2300 UTC every Wednesday, notices of volcanic activity posted on these pages are preliminary and subject to change as events are studied in more detail.

This is not a comprehensive list of all of Earth's volcanoes erupting during the week, but rather a summary of activity that meet criteria discussed in detail in the "Criteria and Disclaimers" section. Carefully reviewed, detailed narratives on various volcanoes are published as reports of the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network.

The RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed is identical to the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report minus some features including the header information (latitude and longitude and summit elevation), the Geologic Summary, and a link to the volcano's page from the Global Volcanism Program. At the end of each report is a list of the sources used. Each volcano report includes a link from the volcano's name back to the more complete information in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report on the Smithsonian website. This feature was first made available on 5 March 2008.

A Google Earth network link for the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report can be loaded into the free Google Earth software, and in turn will load placemarks for volcanoes in the current weekly report. Placemark balloons include the volcano name, report date, report text, sources, and links back to the GVP volcano profile page and to the complete Weekly Report for that week. This feature was first made available on 1 April 2009.

Criteria



The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report does not necessarily include all volcanic activity that occurred on Earth during the week. More than a dozen volcanoes globally have displayed more-or-less continuous eruptive activity for decades or longer, and such routine activity is typically not reported here. Moreover, Earth's sea-floor volcanism is seldom reported even though in theory it represents the single most prolific source of erupted material. The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report summarizes volcanic activity that meets one or more of the following criteria:

- A volcano observatory raises or lowers the alert level at the volcano.
- A volcanic ash advisory has been released by a volcanic ash advisory center (VAAC) stating that an ash cloud has been produced from the volcano.
- A verifiable news report of new activity or a change in activity at the volcano has been issued.
- Observers have reported a significant change in volcanic activity. Such activity can include, but is not restricted to, pyroclastic flows, lahars, lava flows, dome collapse, or increased unrest.

Volcanoes are included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section of the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report if the activity occurs after at least 3 months of quiescence. Once a volcano is included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section, updates will remain in that section unless the activity continues for more than 1 month without escalating, after which time updates will be listed in the "Continuing Activity" section. Volcanoes are also included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section if the volcano is undergoing a period of relatively high unrest, or increasing unrest. This is commonly equal to Alert Level Orange on a scale of Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, where Red is the highest alert. Or alert level 3 on a scale of 1-4 or 1-5.

It is important to note that volcanic activity meeting one or more of these criteria may occur during the week, but may not be included in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report because we did not receive a report.

1. The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is intended to provide timely information about global volcanism on a weekly basis. Consequently, the report is generated rapidly by summarizing volcanic reports from various sources, with little time for fact checking. The accuracy of the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is dependent upon the quality of the volcanic activity reports we receive. Reports published in the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network are monthly, and more carefully reviewed, although all of the volcanoes discussed in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report are not necessarily reported in the Bulletin. Because of our emphasis on rapid reporting on the web we have avoided diacritical marks. Reports are updated on the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report web page as they are received, therefore information may be included regarding events that occurred before the current report period.

2. Rapidly developing events lead to coverage that is often fragmentary. Volcanoes, their eruptions, and their plumes and associated atmospheric effects are complex phenomena that may require months to years of data analysis in order to create a comprehensive summary and interpretation of events.

3. Preliminary accounts sometimes contain exaggerations and "false alarms," and accordingly, this report may include some events ultimately found to be erroneous or misleading.

4. Many news agencies do not archive the articles they post on the Internet, and therefore the links to some sources may not be active. To obtain information about the cited articles that are no longer available on the Internet contact the source.

Report for Cayambe
During 16-18 September, a cluster of 330 small earthquakes occurred at Cayambe. The earthquakes reached a maximum magnitude of 3.6. They occurred on the volcano's SW flank, where previous clusters had been located. The cluster had not reached the level of one that took place in March of 2004. IG reported that these types of clusters occur fairly regularly at Cayambe and could be related to changes in the internal pressure of the volcano. The earthquakes continued through at least 19 September.

Report for Colima
On 16 September at 1045 an explosion occurred at Colima. According to the Washington VAAC, the resultant ash plume rose to ~9.8 km (32,000 ft) a.s.l. The local civil defense agency stated in a news article that ash fell on towns NW of the volcano. Prior to the explosion, microseismicity was recorded for several days. Universidad de Colima reported that microseismicity often precedes considerable explosions. During 18-19 September, seven small explosions occurred.

Report for Ebeko
Strong fumarolic activity continued at Ebeko's crater during 9-16 September. Ebeko remained at Concern Color Code Yellow.

Report for Karymsky
Seismic signals associated with possible small ash-and-gas plumes from Karymsky were recorded during 9-16 September. A thermal anomaly was visible at the volcano on satellite imagery on 15 September. Karymsky remained at Concern Color Code Orange.

Report for Kilauea
During 14-19 September, lava from Kilauea continued to enter the sea at the East Lae`apuki area, and surface lava flows were visible on the Pulama Pali fault scarp. During the report period, background volcanic tremor was near normal levels at Kilauea's summit. Volcanic tremor reached moderate levels at Pu`u `O`o. Around 19 September, several small shallow earthquakes occurred along the Kao`iki fault system or the adjacent upper southwest rift zone. Small amounts of inflation and deflation occurred at the volcano during the report period.

Report for Klyuchevskoy
An increase in seismicity at Kliuchevskoi during 9-16 September led KVERT to raise the Concern Color Code from Green to Yellow. The amplitude of volcanic tremor at the volcano increased. Weak gas-and-steam emissions and a thermal anomaly were visible on satellite imagery during the week.

Report for Reventador
On 1 and 2 September, lahars traveled down Reventador's flanks. During 5-11 September, there was a substantial decrease in seismicity at Reventador, except for tremor, in comparison to the previous week. Pilots reported ash clouds on 13 and 15 September at a height of ~7 km (23,000 ft) a.s.l. No ash was visible on satellite imagery.

Report for Santa Ana
During 15-19 September, seismicity and gas emissions were above normal levels at Santa Ana as they had been since 27 July. Microseismicity remained at relatively high levels. During the report period, gas plumes rose to ~500 m above the volcano (or 9,400 ft a.s.l.) and the sulfur-dioxide flux reached a maximum of 3,320 metric tons per day on 16 September. No significant changes were seen at the volcano's crater when observed on 19 September in comparison to 13 September. Intense degassing continued and the lagoon remained a "dark coffee" color. Incandescence was visible inside some cracks. Santa Ana remained at Alert Level Yellow Phase 1.

Report for Sheveluch
Growth of Shiveluch's lava dome continued during 9-16 September. Incandescence was visible at the dome on 13 September. Gas-and-steam plumes rose to 3.5 km (11,500 ft) a.s.l. and a large thermal anomaly was visible on satellite imagery. Shiveluch remained at Concern Color Code Orange.

Report for Soufriere Hills
Activity at Soufrière Hills remained at elevated levels during 9-16 September. Observations made during the week suggested that slow lava-dome growth continued on the dome's eastern side, but the western side was obscured by steam. The sulfur-dioxide flux averaged 533 metric tons per day (t/d), slightly above the long-term eruption average of 500 t/d.

Report for Spurr
During 9-16 September, seismicity at Spurr remained above background levels, but there were several indications that the level of unrest was declining. AVO reported that recent observations of the summit lake showed a change in the water color from slate gray to blue-green, which could be indicative of decreasing sulfur-dioxide gas emissions. In addition, there were no observations of the vigorous upwelling of gases that had been seen in the lake earlier this summer. The overall rate of seismicity gradually declined during the previous several months, further suggesting a reduced level of activity. Minor steaming continued from the summit "melt pit" and occasionally from Crater Peak. Spurr remained at Concern Color Code Yellow.

Report for St. Helens
Growth of the new lava dome inside the crater of Mount St. Helens continued during 14-19 September, accompanied by low rates of seismicity, low emissions of steam and volcanic gases, and minor production of ash. There were no significant changes in seismicity or deformation during the report period. Camera images showed that the northern part of the lava dome continued to move westward. St Helens remained at Volcano Advisory (Alert Level 2); aviation color code Orange.

Report for Tungurahua
During 14-19 September, volcanic activity at Tungurahua remained at low levels with small emissions of steam, gas, and variable ash content. On 14 September, a steam column with little ash reached a height of ~300 m above the crater (or 17,500 ft a.s.l.) and drifted W. Small amounts of ash fell in Puela, ~8 km SW of the volcano.

Report for Veniaminof
Based on interpretations of seismic data at Veniaminof, minor ash emission continued at a very low rate of 1-5 events per day. AVO reported that it was likely that diffuse ash plumes rose to heights less than ~3 km (10,000 ft) a.s.l. and were confined to the summit caldera. Veniaminof remained at Concern Color Code Yellow.
