 Captain Basil Hall (HMS Conway) observed an eruption from Cook volcano on 25 November 1820, while sailing SE of the volcano. The ejection of incandescent material was seen at intervals of 4-5 minutes (Martinic, 1988). The activity continued until the following day.

 The French navigator Josselin Gardin observed "volcanic phenomena" in the direction of Cook volcano while sailing south of the volcano in late November, 1712. This location was referred to on late 18th century maps as Volcán San Clemente (Martinic, 1988).
