Two melanephelinite cones of probable Holocene age, Izumbwe and Mpoli, are located ~18 km WNW of Ngozi caldera and just NW of Izumbwe village. These pyroclastic cones, about 1.5 km apart, represent the youngest eruptive activity within the Songwe Basin (Ebinger et al., 1989).
The Global Volcanism Program is not aware of any Holocene eruptions from Izumbwe-Mpoli. If this volcano has had large eruptions (VEI >= 4) prior to 10,000 years ago, information might be found on the Izumbwe-Mpoli page in the LaMEVE (Large Magnitude Explosive Volcanic Eruptions) database, a part of the Volcano Global Risk Identification and Analysis Project (VOGRIPA).
