Lava fountains rising from a vent along an eruptive fissure feed an incandescent lava flow that travels east and then turns toward the north. This September 15, 1984 photo was taken near the end of a two-week-long eruption that began on September 4. An 8.5-km-long fissure, initially active along its entire length, fed lava flows that covered 24 sq km.
