Global Volcanism Program | Image GVP-09135

An aerial view from the north looks down the chain of vents extending north from Poás volcano. In the foreground is the Bosque Alegre (Laguna Hule) maar complex, and the forested peak in the middle distance is Cerro Congo volcano. Poás volcano forms the horizon, about 12 km to the south. The Bosque Alegre complex contains three lagoons, Laguna Congo (lower right), a small unnamed one above it, and Laguna Hule (left center). The 2-km-wide complex last erupted about 2730 years ago.
