Gases rise from a sulfur-encrusted, ~2 m high fumarolic vent on Mutnovsky. Widespread fumarolic activity occurs in several craters. The Verkhneye fumarole field covers a 3,200 m² area of the NW part of the active crater. The Donnoye fumarole field on northern Mutnovsky occupies a former crater lake.

Scientists use a COSPEC (Correlation Spectrometer) instrument to measure the sulfur dioxide (SO₂) content of a volcanic plume from Fuego volcano in Guatemala. Measuring the amount of SO₂ and other gases in volcanic plumes are useful tools for eruption monitoring.
