[ 1606 ] Discredited Eruption

Although Mallick and Ash (1975) cited another source (Harrison, 1937) stating that Queiros saw the Mere Lava volcano smoking in 1606, a reading of the Markham (1904) translation does not support an interpretation of volcanic activity. A full description of the island, plants, and people did not indicate volcanism, and the relevant text is as follows: "Much greater was [the crews] satisfaction when they came close [to the island], and saw smoke, and natives calling to the launch to come nearer."
