Geological Summary

The large gently dipping shield-like Uksichan volcano covers 1,850 km², and is the largest of the Sredinny Range with a 300 km³ volume. Several dacitic domes fill the 12-km-wide central caldera; the largest of these rises 900 m above the caldera floor to form the summit. Initial lava flows traveled up to 15-20 km, but later flows were thicker and more viscous. In contrast to the W and NW flanks, which consist exclusively of lava flows, the E and SE flanks contain substantial amounts of pyroclastic material. Cinder cones and small shields are located on the flanks. Early geological studies in the Sredinny Range (Ogorodov et al., 1972) assigned Holocene ages based on morphology, but later work noted that these volcanoes appear younger because they have less tephra cover than those in eastern Kamchatka. Researchers such as Ponomareva et al. (2007) do not consider this volcano to be Holocene.

This volcano is located within the Volcanoes of Kamchatka, a UNESCO World Heritage property.

The Global Volcanism Program is not aware of any Holocene eruptions from Uksichan. If this volcano has had large eruptions (VEI >= 4) prior to 12,000 years ago, information might be found on the Uksichan page in the LaMEVE (Large Magnitude Explosive Volcanic Eruptions) database, a part of the Volcano Global Risk Identification and Analysis Project (VOGRIPA).

WOVOdat is a database of volcanic unrest; instrumentally and visually recorded changes in seismicity, ground deformation, gas emission, and other parameters from their normal baselines. It is sponsored by the World Organization of Volcano Observatories (WOVO) and presently hosted at the Earth Observatory of Singapore.

GVMID Data on Volcano Monitoring Infrastructure The Global Volcano Monitoring Infrastructure Database GVMID, is aimed at documenting and improving capabilities of volcano monitoring from the ground and space. GVMID should provide a snapshot and baseline view of the techniques and instrumentation that are in place at various volcanoes, which can be use by volcano observatories as reference to setup new monitoring system or improving networks at a specific volcano. These data will allow identification of what monitoring gaps exist, which can be then targeted by remote sensing infrastructure and future instrument deployments.
