An ash plume rises above Pavlof volcano on 13 November 1996, as seen from Nelson Lagoon about 70 km NE of the volcano. Intermittent small ash and Strombolian eruptions began on 15 September 1996. Lava fountains produced a lava flow. In 1996 the eruption plumes reached 6.7 km on 18 October, 7.3 km on 4 November, 9.2 km on 23 November, and 8.7 km on 11 December.
