A phreatic eruption on the W side of the Cisingshan lava dome accompanied the Cisingshan debris avalanche about 6,000 years ago. The Tatun (Datun) volcano group contains around 20 lava domes and is seen here NE of Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan. The latest eruptions are late Pleistocene and mid-Holocene. Vigorous submarine fumarolic activity discolors water over broad areas around Kueishantao Island (also known as Gueishan Island, or "Turtle Mountain Island") off the E coast of Taiwan.
