The Tatun (Datun) volcano group contains around 20 lava domes and is seen here NE of Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan. The latest eruptions are late Pleistocene and mid-Holocene. Vigorous submarine fumarolic activity discolors water over broad areas around Kueishantao Island (also known as Gueishan Island, or "Turtle Mountain Island") off the E coast of Taiwan. A phreatic eruption on the W side of the Cisingshan lava dome accompanied the Cisingshan debris avalanche about 6,000 years ago.
