Global Volcanism Program | Image GVP-01820

A small pyroclastic flow descends the Bonga valley on the E flank of Mayon in March 1993. Collapse of a lava flow front traveling down the gully produced many small pyroclastic flows during the 1993 eruption. A large pyroclastic flow on 2 February, the first day of the eruption, traveled 6 km down this same gully and killed 75 people. Photo by Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, 1993.
