An aerial overview of Colima's SW face on the exceptionally clear day of March 11, 1999 shows recently erupted lava flows and their bounding levees. Nevado de Colima appears to the right of the steaming summit lava dome of Volcán de Colima. Intermittent ash eruptions beginning in 1997 were followed a year later by lava effusion, dome growth, pyroclastic flows, and more powerful explosive eruptions.
