Weekly Volcanic Activity Map

The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is a cooperative project between the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program and the US Geological Survey's Volcano Hazards Program. Updated by 2300 UTC every Wednesday and averaging 16 reported volcanoes, this is not a comprehensive list of all eruptions this week, but rather a summary of activity that meet criteria discussed in the "Criteria and Disclaimers" section below.

Volcanic activity reported here is preliminary and subject to change. Carefully reviewed, detailed narratives over longer time periods are published as reports of the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network available through volcano profile pages.

The RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed is identical to the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report minus some features including the header information (latitude and longitude and summit elevation), the Geologic Summary, and a link to the volcano's page from the Global Volcanism Program. At the end of each report is a list of the sources used. Each volcano report includes a link from the volcano's name back to the more complete information in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report on the Smithsonian website. This feature was first made available on 5 March 2008.

A Google Earth network link for the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report can be loaded into the free Google Earth software, and in turn will load placemarks for volcanoes in the current weekly report. Placemark balloons include the volcano name, report date, report text, sources, and links back to the GVP volcano profile page and to the complete Weekly Report for that week. This feature was first made available on 1 April 2009.

 Criteria & Disclaimers

Criteria



The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report does not necessarily include all volcanic activity that occurred on Earth during the week. More than a dozen volcanoes globally have displayed more-or-less continuous eruptive activity for decades or longer, and such routine activity is typically not reported here. Moreover, Earth's sea-floor volcanism is seldom reported even though in theory it represents the single most prolific source of erupted material. The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report summarizes volcanic activity that meets one or more of the following criteria:

- A volcano observatory raises or lowers the alert level at the volcano.
- A volcanic ash advisory has been released by a volcanic ash advisory center (VAAC) stating that an ash cloud has been produced from the volcano.
- A verifiable news report of new activity or a change in activity at the volcano has been issued.
- Observers have reported a significant change in volcanic activity. Such activity can include, but is not restricted to, pyroclastic flows, lahars, lava flows, dome collapse, or increased unrest.

Volcanoes are included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section of the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report if the activity occurs after at least 3 months of quiescence. Once a volcano is included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section, updates will remain in that section unless the activity continues for more than 1 month without escalating, after which time updates will be listed in the "Continuing Activity" section. Volcanoes are also included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section if the volcano is undergoing a period of relatively high unrest, or increasing unrest. This is commonly equal to Alert Level Orange on a scale of Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, where Red is the highest alert. Or alert level 3 on a scale of 1-4 or 1-5.

It is important to note that volcanic activity meeting one or more of these criteria may occur during the week, but may not be included in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report because we did not receive a report.

1. The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is intended to provide timely information about global volcanism on a weekly basis. Consequently, the report is generated rapidly by summarizing volcanic reports from various sources, with little time for fact checking. The accuracy of the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is dependent upon the quality of the volcanic activity reports we receive. Reports published in the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network are cover longer time periods and are more carefully reviewed, although all of the volcanoes discussed in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report are not necessarily reported in the Bulletin. Because of our emphasis on rapid reporting on the web we have avoided diacritical marks. Reports are updated on the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report web page as they are received, therefore information may be included regarding events that occurred before the current report period.

2. Rapidly developing events lead to coverage that is often fragmentary. Volcanoes, their eruptions, and their plumes and associated atmospheric effects are complex phenomena that may require months to years of data analysis in order to create a comprehensive summary and interpretation of events.

3. Preliminary accounts sometimes contain exaggerations and "false alarms," and accordingly, this report may include some events ultimately found to be erroneous or misleading.

4. Many news agencies do not archive the articles they post on the Internet, and therefore the links to some sources may not be active. To obtain information about the cited articles that are no longer available on the Internet contact the source.

Report for Concepcion
According to INETER, an eruption occurred at Concepción on the island of Ometepe on 28 July at dawn. Ash fell in the town of Moyagalpa (W of Ometepe island), and in the zones of Rivas, San Jorge, Buenos Aires, Potosí, and Belén. Seismic tremor was recorded at a seismic station N of the volcano, but no large earthquakes were recorded. By the afternoon, ashfall had reduced considerably or completely ceased, while gas emission continued. No thermal anomalies were observed on satellite imagery. On 29 July during 0500-0800, a series of volcanic earthquakes occurred that may have been associated with small explosions in the crater. At 1025 the seismic station recorded a moderate explosion in the crater. On 31 July, seismic tremor occurred with slight variations. According to news articles, no one was injured by the eruptions.

Report for Ebeko
KVERT raised the Concern Color Code at Ebeko around 29 July from Green to Yellow. During 22-29 July, new fumaroles were noted in the volcano's active crater, and an explosion in the crater emitted hot steam. These types of strong changes in the crater had not been observed since 1982.

Report for Anatahan
During 27 July to 1 August, eruptive activity continued at Anatahan, with plumes rising several thousands of meters above the volcano. On 1 August the National Weather Service at Tiyan, Guam issued a volcanic ash advisory for the islands of Saipan and Tinian. A strong sulfur odor was reported by numerous residents, and ash was observed on the tips of aircraft at Saipan International Airport. According to a news article, flights leaving the airport were delayed due to a lack of visibility caused by volcanic haze.

Report for Cleveland
Satellite imagery of Cleveland during 22-29 July showed minor steaming from the volcano's summit, possible fresh localized ash deposits, and a weak thermal anomaly. According to AVO, these observations suggested that low-level volcanic unrest continued. Cleveland remained at Concern Color Code Yellow.

Report for Colima
During 29 July to 1 August, steam-and-ash emissions occurred from Colima. According to the Washington VAAC, the highest-rising emission reached 6.1 km (~20,000 ft) a.s.l. on 30 July. Due to the threat of lahars forming on the volcano's flanks, Universidad de Colima advised avoiding the ravines of La Lumbre, San Antonio, Monte Grande (in Colima state), and La Arena (in Jalisco state).

Report for Karangetang
Satellite imagery showed an ash cloud from Karangetang on 2 August at a height of 4.6 km (~15,000 ft) a.s.l.

Report for Karymsky
Seismicity was above background levels at Karymsky during 22-29 July. Based on interpretations of seismic data, ash-and-gas plumes may have reached heights of 2.5-3 km (8,200-9,800 ft) a.s.l. On 22 July, a weak thermal anomaly and a short E-drifting ash-and-gas plume were visible on satellite imagery. Karymsky remained at Concern Color Code Orange.

Report for Kilauea
On 30 July, small areas of surface lava were visible along Kilauea's PKK lava flow on the Pulama pali fault scarp. Background volcanic tremor was at normal levels at Kilauea's summit, and at moderate levels at Pu`u `O`o cone. There were periods of inflation and deformation.

Report for Klyuchevskoy
A decrease in volcanic tremor at Kliuchevskoi during the end of the week of 22-29 July led KVERT to reduce the Concern Color Code from Orange to Yellow. On 22 July, weak ash-and-gas plumes rose to ~100 m above the crater (16,200 ft a.s.l.).

Report for Popocatepetl
Several ash-and-steam emissions occurred at Popocatépetl during 27 July to 2 August, with the highest rising plume reaching 7.3 km (24,000 ft) a.s.l. on 29 July.

Report for Rabaul
A pilot observed an ash plume from Rabaul on 28 July at a height of 3 km (~10,000 ft) a.s.l. Ash was not visible on satellite data.

Report for Sheveluch
Shiveluch's lava dome continued to grow during 22-29 July. On 23 July, a persistent thermal anomaly was visible on satellite imagery, and incandescence was observed at the lava dome. Shiveluch remained at Concern Color Code Orange.

Report for Soufriere Hills
Seismic and volcanic activity at Soufrière Hills remained at elevated levels during 22-29 July. The seismic network recorded 29 volcano-tectonic, four hybrid, and five long-period earthquakes. It also recorded one explosion and 23 rockfalls. An explosion on 27 July at 0114 deposited ash between Plymouth on the island's W side, and Brades on the island's NW side. The explosion was similar to, but smaller than, an explosion on 18 July. Occasional ash venting also occurred during the report week. The daily recorded sulfur-dioxide flux averaged 510 metric tons per day (t/d), slightly above the long-term average of 500 t/d.

Report for St. Helens
Rockfalls and associated minor ash plumes continued to be generated from Mount St Helen's growing lava dome during 27 July to 2 August. Measurements taken on 27 July revealed that emission rates of volcanic gases remained fairly constant, with 60 tons per day of sulfur dioxide and 880 tons per day of carbon dioxide. Analysis of a rock sample collected from the dome on 13 July showed no change in the composition of lava being extruded. St. Helens remained at Volcano Advisory (Alert Level 2); aviation color code Orange.
