Medel y Alvarado (1963), chronicler of the nearby town of San Andrés, makes reference to the existence of Ixtlán, a village formerly located on the western slopes of the volcano, which early after the conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards was covered by ash from an eruption occurring probably in 1534. According to the chronicler this eruption compelled the inhabitants to abandon their village and settle farther away, a migration that led to the foundation of Tuxtla (now Santiago Tuxtla) and Tzacoalco (now San Andrés Tuxtla). However, Espindola et al. (2010) noted that it is doubtful whether an eruption occurred in that year because there are no other accounts or evidence of its occurrence.
