Weekly Volcanic Activity Map

The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is a cooperative project between the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program and the US Geological Survey's Volcano Hazards Program. Updated by 2300 UTC every Wednesday and averaging 16 reported volcanoes, this is not a comprehensive list of all eruptions this week, but rather a summary of activity that meet criteria discussed in the "Criteria and Disclaimers" section below.

Volcanic activity reported here is preliminary and subject to change. Carefully reviewed, detailed narratives over longer time periods are published as reports of the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network available through volcano profile pages.

The RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed is identical to the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report minus some features including the header information (latitude and longitude and summit elevation), the Geologic Summary, and a link to the volcano's page from the Global Volcanism Program. At the end of each report is a list of the sources used. Each volcano report includes a link from the volcano's name back to the more complete information in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report on the Smithsonian website. This feature was first made available on 5 March 2008.

A Google Earth network link for the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report can be loaded into the free Google Earth software, and in turn will load placemarks for volcanoes in the current weekly report. Placemark balloons include the volcano name, report date, report text, sources, and links back to the GVP volcano profile page and to the complete Weekly Report for that week. This feature was first made available on 1 April 2009.

Criteria



The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report does not necessarily include all volcanic activity that occurred on Earth during the week. More than a dozen volcanoes globally have displayed more-or-less continuous eruptive activity for decades or longer, and such routine activity is typically not reported here. Moreover, Earth's sea-floor volcanism is seldom reported even though in theory it represents the single most prolific source of erupted material. The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report summarizes volcanic activity that meets one or more of the following criteria:

- A volcano observatory raises or lowers the alert level at the volcano.
- A volcanic ash advisory has been released by a volcanic ash advisory center (VAAC) stating that an ash cloud has been produced from the volcano.
- A verifiable news report of new activity or a change in activity at the volcano has been issued.
- Observers have reported a significant change in volcanic activity. Such activity can include, but is not restricted to, pyroclastic flows, lahars, lava flows, dome collapse, or increased unrest.

Volcanoes are included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section of the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report if the activity occurs after at least 3 months of quiescence. Once a volcano is included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section, updates will remain in that section unless the activity continues for more than 1 month without escalating, after which time updates will be listed in the "Continuing Activity" section. Volcanoes are also included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section if the volcano is undergoing a period of relatively high unrest, or increasing unrest. This is commonly equal to Alert Level Orange on a scale of Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, where Red is the highest alert. Or alert level 3 on a scale of 1-4 or 1-5.

It is important to note that volcanic activity meeting one or more of these criteria may occur during the week, but may not be included in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report because we did not receive a report.

1. The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is intended to provide timely information about global volcanism on a weekly basis. Consequently, the report is generated rapidly by summarizing volcanic reports from various sources, with little time for fact checking. The accuracy of the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is dependent upon the quality of the volcanic activity reports we receive. Reports published in the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network are cover longer time periods and are more carefully reviewed, although all of the volcanoes discussed in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report are not necessarily reported in the Bulletin. Because of our emphasis on rapid reporting on the web we have avoided diacritical marks. Reports are updated on the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report web page as they are received, therefore information may be included regarding events that occurred before the current report period.

2. Rapidly developing events lead to coverage that is often fragmentary. Volcanoes, their eruptions, and their plumes and associated atmospheric effects are complex phenomena that may require months to years of data analysis in order to create a comprehensive summary and interpretation of events.

3. Preliminary accounts sometimes contain exaggerations and "false alarms," and accordingly, this report may include some events ultimately found to be erroneous or misleading.

4. Many news agencies do not archive the articles they post on the Internet, and therefore the links to some sources may not be active. To obtain information about the cited articles that are no longer available on the Internet contact the source.

Report for Krakatau
On 13 April at 0800, DVGHM raised the Alert Level at Krakatau to 2 (on a scale of 1-4).

Report for Talang
On 12 April during 0340-0600, an eruption at Talang produced an ash plume that rose to a height of ~1 km above the crater (~12,800 ft a.s.l.). About 4 mm of ash fell in the village of Bukit Sileh, NE of the volcano. The Alert Level was raised to 4, the highest level. News articles reported that thousands of residents near the volcano evacuated. Several days prior to the eruption, a "gray ash cloud" was visible rising to ~100 m above the volcano's summit (9,800 ft a.s.l.).

On 13 April volcanic and seismic activity decreased in comparison to the previous day. A "white-gray ash plume" rose 250 m (10,300 ft a.s.l.) above Kawah Mati crater, and gas was emitted from Gabuo Atas crater. There was a decrease in the number of deep volcanic, shallow volcanic, and explosion earthquakes. Talang remained at Alert Level 4.

Report for Tangkuban Parahu
On 13 April at 0700 DVGHM raised the Alert Level at Tangkubanparahu to 2 (on a scale of 1-4) due to an increase in seismicity at the volcano. In addition to an increase in seismicity in comparison to the previous day, there was a strong scent of sulfur near Ratu crater. On the 13th at 1300 the Alert Level was raised to 3 due to a further increase in seismicity and the occurrence of tremor. No ash plume was observed. Visitors were banned from the summit and crater area.

Report for Anatahan
Activity decreased at Anatahan after an eruption beginning on 6 April at 0300 produced an ash plume to the highest altitude in recorded history at the volcano ~15.2 km (~50,000 ft) a.s.l. During 7-11 April seismicity was at very low levels, near background. On the 11th, a steam-and-ash plume rose ~2.7 km (~9,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted ~280 km WSW.

Report for Chikurachki
During 4-5 April, weak fumarolic activity occurred at Chikurachki. Ash deposits covered the WNW slope of the volcano. During 1-8 April, Chikurachki remained at Concern Color Code Orange.

Report for Colima
During 6-11 April there were several explosions at Colima. According to the Washington VAAC, resultant ash plumes rose to a maximum height of ~9.1 km (~30,000 ft) a.s.l.

Report for Kanlaon
A low-energy ash emission from Canlaon on 7 April at 1429 generated a cloud to a height of ~100 m above the crater (~8,300 ft a.s.l.). The cloud slowly drifted SW. Only the crater and upper SW slopes of the volcano were affected by the emission. According to PHIVOLCS, the seismic monitoring network around the volcano did not record any earthquakes during the event. Canlaon remained at Alert Level 1.

Report for Karymsky
During 1-8 April, seismicity was above background levels at Karymsky, with the number of shallow daily earthquakes decreasing from 500 to 100 during the week. Ash deposits extended ~15 km SW on 2 April. Karymsky remained at Concern Color Code Orange.

Report for Kilauea
During 6-11 April, lava from Kilauea continued to flow into the ocean at several points. Seismicity remained above background levels at Kilauea's summit, consisting mainly of tremor and some long-period earthquakes. Volcanic tremor was at moderate levels at Pu`u `O`o. Episodes of inflation and deflation occurred during the week.

Report for Klyuchevskoy
Seismic activity was above background levels during 1-8 April, with a large number of shallow earthquakes occurring. Ash-and-gas plumes rose to 1 km above the crater (19,100 ft. a.s.l.). Eruptive and seismic activity decreased significantly on 7 April. Kliuchevskoi remained at Concern Color Code Orange.

Report for Reventador
A change in seismic behavior was noted at Reventador during 1-8 April that was marked by episodes of tremor. About 45 tremor episodes occurred regularly during the week. During the evening of 6 April, incandescence was visible at the volcano. Based on information from IG, the Washington VAAC reported that ash from Reventador was visible on 8 April around 1430 at a height of ~4.6 km (15,000 ft a.s.l.). Ash was not visible on satellite imagery.

Report for Sheveluch
During 1-8 April, intensive growth of the new extrusion at the W part of Shiveluch's lava dome continued. The eastern and western parts of the lava dome had become nearly level. Gas-and-steam plumes rose to ~1 km above the 2.5-km-high lava dome (~11,500 ft a.s.l.).Shiveluch remained at Concern Color Code Orange.

Report for St. Helens
During 6-11 April, growth of the new lava dome inside the crater of Mount St. Helens continued, accompanied by low rates of seismicity, low emissions of steam and volcanic gases, and minor production of ash. Observations on 6 April revealed that the smooth whaleback-shaped portion of the growing lava dome was broken by numerous fractures, and the edges had crumbled greatly. Several deep gashes on the E, N, and W sides frequently produced rockfalls and accompanying ash clouds. On 10 April the new dome continued to fracture and spread laterally. As a consequence, the dome's summit has dropped by a few tens of meters during the previous 2-3 weeks, except for isolated high-standing remnants.

Earthquakes steadily decreased in magnitude and number over the week. A GPS receiver 200 m N of the new dome crept steadily NNW about 10 cm per day. The combination of the GPS measurements adjacent to the lava dome and the qualitative estimate of lateral spreading suggested that extrusion of new lava continued during the report week. St. Helens remained at Volcano Advisory (Alert Level 2); aviation color code Orange.

Report for Tungurahua
During 7-11 April, volcanic and seismic activity were at relatively low levels at Tungurahua. Low-energy gas-and-steam plumes were emitted.
