Weekly Volcanic Activity Map

The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is a cooperative project between the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program and the US Geological Survey's Volcano Hazards Program. Updated by 2300 UTC every Wednesday and averaging 16 reported volcanoes, this is not a comprehensive list of all eruptions this week, but rather a summary of activity that meet criteria discussed in the "Criteria and Disclaimers" section below.

Volcanic activity reported here is preliminary and subject to change. Carefully reviewed, detailed narratives over longer time periods are published as reports of the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network available through volcano profile pages.

The RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed is identical to the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report minus some features including the header information (latitude and longitude and summit elevation), the Geologic Summary, and a link to the volcano's page from the Global Volcanism Program. At the end of each report is a list of the sources used. Each volcano report includes a link from the volcano's name back to the more complete information in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report on the Smithsonian website. This feature was first made available on 5 March 2008.

A Google Earth network link for the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report can be loaded into the free Google Earth software, and in turn will load placemarks for volcanoes in the current weekly report. Placemark balloons include the volcano name, report date, report text, sources, and links back to the GVP volcano profile page and to the complete Weekly Report for that week. This feature was first made available on 1 April 2009.

 Criteria & Disclaimers

Criteria



The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report does not necessarily include all volcanic activity that occurred on Earth during the week. More than a dozen volcanoes globally have displayed more-or-less continuous eruptive activity for decades or longer, and such routine activity is typically not reported here. Moreover, Earth's sea-floor volcanism is seldom reported even though in theory it represents the single most prolific source of erupted material. The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report summarizes volcanic activity that meets one or more of the following criteria:

- A volcano observatory raises or lowers the alert level at the volcano.
- A volcanic ash advisory has been released by a volcanic ash advisory center (VAAC) stating that an ash cloud has been produced from the volcano.
- A verifiable news report of new activity or a change in activity at the volcano has been issued.
- Observers have reported a significant change in volcanic activity. Such activity can include, but is not restricted to, pyroclastic flows, lahars, lava flows, dome collapse, or increased unrest.

Volcanoes are included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section of the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report if the activity occurs after at least 3 months of quiescence. Once a volcano is included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section, updates will remain in that section unless the activity continues for more than 1 month without escalating, after which time updates will be listed in the "Continuing Activity" section. Volcanoes are also included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section if the volcano is undergoing a period of relatively high unrest, or increasing unrest. This is commonly equal to Alert Level Orange on a scale of Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, where Red is the highest alert. Or alert level 3 on a scale of 1-4 or 1-5.

It is important to note that volcanic activity meeting one or more of these criteria may occur during the week, but may not be included in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report because we did not receive a report.

1. The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is intended to provide timely information about global volcanism on a weekly basis. Consequently, the report is generated rapidly by summarizing volcanic reports from various sources, with little time for fact checking. The accuracy of the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is dependent upon the quality of the volcanic activity reports we receive. Reports published in the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network are cover longer time periods and are more carefully reviewed, although all of the volcanoes discussed in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report are not necessarily reported in the Bulletin. Because of our emphasis on rapid reporting on the web we have avoided diacritical marks. Reports are updated on the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report web page as they are received, therefore information may be included regarding events that occurred before the current report period.

2. Rapidly developing events lead to coverage that is often fragmentary. Volcanoes, their eruptions, and their plumes and associated atmospheric effects are complex phenomena that may require months to years of data analysis in order to create a comprehensive summary and interpretation of events.

3. Preliminary accounts sometimes contain exaggerations and "false alarms," and accordingly, this report may include some events ultimately found to be erroneous or misleading.

4. Many news agencies do not archive the articles they post on the Internet, and therefore the links to some sources may not be active. To obtain information about the cited articles that are no longer available on the Internet contact the source.

Report for Arenal
Explosive activity began at Arenal on 2 November at 1454. A pyroclastic flow was generated at 1502 and movement continued for ~10 minutes. During a visit to the volcano the next day, OVISICORI-UNA scientists found that the mid-sized pyroclastic flow traveled down the volcano's W flank, producing an ash cloud that drifted SE. An area was impacted that extended from the volcano's summit to about 1,000 m a.s.l. on Arenal's W flank. The pyroclastic flow occurred in an area that is closed to visitors. During the previous several months lava flows on the volcano's SW flank had been growing rapidly.

Report for Avachinsky
KVERT reported on 8 November that the number and energy of shallow earthquakes below Avachinsky increased during the previous month. A weak thermal anomaly near the volcano's summit was visible on satellite imagery on 7 November. KVERT reported that based on these changes the possibility of sudden ash explosions at Avachinsky had increased, so the Concern Color Code was raised from Green to Yellow on 8 November.

Report for Barren Island
A news article reported on 9 November that volcanic activity increased at Barren Island beginning on 4 November. According to Professor Chaandrasekharam of the Indian Institute of Technology and members of the Indian Coast Guard, since the 4th there were large volumes of gas and ash emissions, and lava flows reached the sea. Professor Chaandrasekharam stated that the current activity is more intense than when the eruption began on 28 May 2005. The recent activity was preceded by nearly ten earthquakes in the region, including M 4.8 and 4.5 earthquakes on 3 November.

Report for Veniaminof
The Concern Color Code at Veniaminof was increased on 4 November from Green to Yellow after a low-level minor ash emission occurred from the intracaldera cone beginning at 0929. Ash rose a few hundred meters above the cone, drifted E, and dissipated rapidly. Minor ashfall was probably confined to the summit caldera. During the previous 2 weeks, occasional steaming from the intracaldera cone was observed. Very weak seismic tremor and a few small discrete seismic events were recorded at the station closest to the active cone. However, AVO reported that there were no indications from seismic data that a significantly larger eruption was imminent. They expect that steam and ash emissions may continue intermittently and could pose a hazard to people and low-flying aircraft in the vicinity of the active cone.

Report for Colima
Several small explosions occurred at Colima during 2-8 November, producing ash plumes that rose to a maximum height of ~7.6 km (25,000 ft) a.s.l. on 4 November.

Report for Fuego
During 2-7 November, several weak explosions occurred at Fuego, producing ash plumes that rose to low levels. Lava flows traveled down the volcano's S and SW flanks, extending 600 m towards the Taniluya ravine, and 300 m towards the Cenizas ravine. Avalanches of incandescent material occurred from the lava-flow fronts.

Report for Galeras
During 31 October to 7 November, low-level seismicity occurred at Galeras, including several tornillo earthquakes (long-period seismic events related to pressurized fluid flow at shallow depth). In addition, small amounts of deformation were recorded at the volcano. Galeras remained at Alert Level 3 (changes in the behavior of volcanic activity have been noted).

Report for Karymsky
Seismicity was above background levels at Karymsky during 28 October to 4 November. Based on interpretations of seismic data, three gas plumes containing some ash possibly rose 3-3.8 km (9,850-12,500 ft) a.s.l. during 29-31 October and 1 November. Ash plumes were visible on satellite imagery extending NE on 31 October and 2 November. Karymsky remained at Concern Color Code Orange.

Report for Kilauea
During 2-7 November, lava from Kilauea continued to enter the sea at the East Lae`apuki area, and surface lava flows were visible on the Pulama pali fault scarp. Background volcanic tremor was near normal levels at Kilauea's summit. Volcanic tremor reached moderate levels at Pu`u `O`o. Small amounts of inflation and deflation occurred at the volcano during the report period.

Report for Klyuchevskoy
Seismic activity at Kliuchevskoi was at background levels during the previous 3 weeks and no activity was observed on satellite imagery. Since there were no indications that an eruption was imminent at Kliuchevskoi, KVERT reduced the Concern Color Code from Yellow to Green on 4 November.

Report for Novarupta
Strong winds in the Katmai area picked up loose ash deposited during the 1912 eruption and carried it E over Kodiak Island. AVO recorded a large area of resuspended ash on satellite imagery. The National Weather Service estimated that the top of the plume was at 1.5 km (5,000 ft) a.s.l. Katmai remained at Concern Color Code Green.

Report for Nyiragongo
On 7 November a thin plume that may have contained some ash was emitted from Nyiragongo and seen on satellite imagery.

Report for Santa Ana
During 2-7 November, seismicity and volcanic activity remained at relatively low levels at Santa Ana. Small earthquakes occurred that were associated with the fracturing of rocks and gas pulses. Sulfur-dioxide emissions were low, with 100 to 200 metric tons recorded daily. Gas emissions rose to low levels above the volcano. The Alert Level within a 5-km radius around the volcano's central crater remained at Red, the highest level.

Report for Santa Maria
During 2-7 November, weak-to-moderate explosions occurred at Santa María's Santiaguito lava-dome complex, producing plumes to a height of ~1 km above the dome (or 15,700 ft a.s.l.). A few weak avalanches of volcanic material were observed SW of the lava dome. A lava flow that formed on 21 October extended ~100 m down the volcano's W flank. Avalanches spalled from the lava flow.

Report for Sheveluch
Seismic activity and lava-dome growth continued at Shiveluch during 28 October to 4 November. Seismicity decreased gradually during the previous 2 weeks and only weak avalanches were recorded, so KVERT reduced the Concern Color Code at Shiveluch from Orange to Yellow on 4 November.

Report for Soufriere Hills
Volcanic and seismic activity remained elevated at Soufrière Hills during 28 October to 4 November. Observations on 4 November confirmed that lava-dome growth continued, predominantly above the volcano's S flank.

Report for St. Helens
Growth of the new lava dome inside the crater of Mount St. Helens continued during 2-7 November, accompanied by low rates of seismicity, low emissions of steam and volcanic gases, and minor production of ash. There were no significant changes in seismicity or deformation during the report period. St Helens remained at Volcano Advisory (Alert Level 2); aviation color code Orange.

Report for Tungurahua
During 2-6 November, volcanic activity at Tungurahua remained at low levels with small emissions of steam, gas, and low ash content. Rain mixed with ash deposits and produced lahars on 3 November in the N and W sectors of the volcano, leading to the temporary closure of the Baños-Riobamba highway, and a highway in Pampas.
