The east rift zone of Haleakalā extends to the eastern tip of Maui, north of this beach at Hamoa. Frequent eruptions have taken place along the east rift zone during the Holocene. The Waihoi Valley forms the notch to the upper left is one of several large erosional valleys down the flanks.
