Weekly Volcanic Activity Map

The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is a cooperative project between the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program and the US Geological Survey's Volcano Hazards Program. Updated by 2300 UTC every Wednesday, notices of volcanic activity posted on these pages are preliminary and subject to change as events are studied in more detail.

This is not a comprehensive list of all of Earth's volcanoes erupting during the week, but rather a summary of activity that meet criteria discussed in detail in the "Criteria and Disclaimers" section. Carefully reviewed, detailed narratives on various volcanoes are published as reports of the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network.

The RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed is identical to the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report minus some features including the header information (latitude and longitude and summit elevation), the Geologic Summary, and a link to the volcano's page from the Global Volcanism Program. At the end of each report is a list of the sources used. Each volcano report includes a link from the volcano's name back to the more complete information in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report on the Smithsonian website. This feature was first made available on 5 March 2008.

A Google Earth network link for the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report can be loaded into the free Google Earth software, and in turn will load placemarks for volcanoes in the current weekly report. Placemark balloons include the volcano name, report date, report text, sources, and links back to the GVP volcano profile page and to the complete Weekly Report for that week. This feature was first made available on 1 April 2009.

Criteria



The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report does not necessarily include all volcanic activity that occurred on Earth during the week. More than a dozen volcanoes globally have displayed more-or-less continuous eruptive activity for decades or longer, and such routine activity is typically not reported here. Moreover, Earth's sea-floor volcanism is seldom reported even though in theory it represents the single most prolific source of erupted material. The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report summarizes volcanic activity that meets one or more of the following criteria:

- A volcano observatory raises or lowers the alert level at the volcano.
- A volcanic ash advisory has been released by a volcanic ash advisory center (VAAC) stating that an ash cloud has been produced from the volcano.
- A verifiable news report of new activity or a change in activity at the volcano has been issued.
- Observers have reported a significant change in volcanic activity. Such activity can include, but is not restricted to, pyroclastic flows, lahars, lava flows, dome collapse, or increased unrest.

Volcanoes are included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section of the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report if the activity occurs after at least 3 months of quiescence. Once a volcano is included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section, updates will remain in that section unless the activity continues for more than 1 month without escalating, after which time updates will be listed in the "Continuing Activity" section. Volcanoes are also included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section if the volcano is undergoing a period of relatively high unrest, or increasing unrest. This is commonly equal to Alert Level Orange on a scale of Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, where Red is the highest alert. Or alert level 3 on a scale of 1-4 or 1-5.

It is important to note that volcanic activity meeting one or more of these criteria may occur during the week, but may not be included in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report because we did not receive a report.

1. The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is intended to provide timely information about global volcanism on a weekly basis. Consequently, the report is generated rapidly by summarizing volcanic reports from various sources, with little time for fact checking. The accuracy of the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is dependent upon the quality of the volcanic activity reports we receive. Reports published in the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network are monthly, and more carefully reviewed, although all of the volcanoes discussed in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report are not necessarily reported in the Bulletin. Because of our emphasis on rapid reporting on the web we have avoided diacritical marks. Reports are updated on the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report web page as they are received, therefore information may be included regarding events that occurred before the current report period.

2. Rapidly developing events lead to coverage that is often fragmentary. Volcanoes, their eruptions, and their plumes and associated atmospheric effects are complex phenomena that may require months to years of data analysis in order to create a comprehensive summary and interpretation of events.

3. Preliminary accounts sometimes contain exaggerations and "false alarms," and accordingly, this report may include some events ultimately found to be erroneous or misleading.

4. Many news agencies do not archive the articles they post on the Internet, and therefore the links to some sources may not be active. To obtain information about the cited articles that are no longer available on the Internet contact the source.

Report for Tengger Caldera
On 8 June, the Bromo vent of Tengger Caldera erupted, producing a gas-and-ash plume that rose ~3 km above the summit and caused light tephra-fall in the surrounding area. Two people were killed and at least seven injured by ballistics during the eruption. No evacuations have been ordered.

Report for Anatahan
During 2-8 June, elevated seismicity at Anatahan consisted of discrete explosion signals. Every few minutes explosions threw volcanic material hundreds of meters out of the crater, and steam and ash likely rose a few hundred meters.

Report for Awu
According to news reports, Awu began erupting small ash plumes on 5 June. On 7 June, following a 48-hour-long period of increasing activity, authorities raised the Volcano Warning Level from Alert to Ready at 1040 and finally to Beware, the highest level of alert, at 1600. By 8 June, continuous small earthquakes were occurring and small eruptions produced gas-and-ash plumes and threw small ballistics up to 2 km above the summit. Up to 20,000 people have been evacuated from the area around the volcano.

Report for Dukono
On 7 June a thin ash plume from Dukono was visible in satellite imagery extending ~75 km ESE at ~3 km a.s.l.. On 8 June another thin ash plume was observed in satellite imagery extending ~65 km ESE at an altitude of ~2 km a.s.l.

Report for Fuego
On 1 June, five moderately strong explosions occurred at Fuego with gas-and-ash plumes rising up to 2 km above the summit. Incandescent avalanches of material from these explosions occurred in the Santa Teresa and Río Taniluyá ravines. This pulse of activity was preceded by half an hour and followed by two hours of explosions producing steam plumes rising up to ~0.5 km above the summit. On 6 June, frequent small explosions produced gas plumes that rose to ~0.5 km above the summit and less frequent explosions produced gas-and-ash plumes that rose to ~1.0 km above the summit. Incandescent avalanches from these explosions occurred in the Santa Teresa and Ceniza ravines. A hot lahar, followed 45 minutes later by a smaller lahar, occurred in the Zanjón Barranca Seca ravine on 6 June. Moderate explosions continued on 7 June, producing small gas-and-ash plumes to ~0.5 km above the summit.

Report for Karymsky
Between 28 May and 4 June, seismic activity was above background levels at Karymsky with up to 520 shallow earthquakes recorded and possible gas-and-ash plumes up to 4.5 km a.s.l. each day. A possible small eruption was observed on 28 May and an eruption was also observed on 2 June. An eruption on 6 June produced a plume that rose to ~3 km a.s.l. and extended to the SE. Karymsky remained at Concern Color Code Orange.

Report for Kilauea
Lava from Kilauea continued to enter the ocean at several points throughout the reporting week, culminating in several new lava deltas. Some small littoral explosions were reported on 6 June, but otherwise the ocean entry was passive. Many small lava flows were observed in the area of the ocean entries, on the coastal flat, in the Paliuli area, and in the Kuhio area. Incandescence and some minor spattering was observed at Pu`u `O`o throughout the week. Seismicity at Pu`u `O`o was moderate to high, but the overall seismicity at Kilauea was low. Several episodes of inflation and deflation were recorded during the week.

Report for Nyiragongo
On 4 June a new eruption began at Nyiragongo, producing a plume that probably contained ash, was under ~6 km a.s.l., and stretched ~150 km SW. By 5 June the plume had extended to 185 km SW and was under ~4 km a.s.l. On 6 June, only a moderate plume stretching to the SW and a disconnected remnant of the earlier plume was observed in satellite imagery. This moderate plume drifting SW remained through 7 June. On 8 June an ash plume extended ~75 km SW at an altitude of ~5.5 km a.s.l.

Report for Santa Maria
On 1 June, 33 weak to moderate explosions producing plumes up to 1.5 km above the summit were recorded at the Santiaguito dome of Santa María. Collapses on the SW side of the Caliente dome caused small pyroclastic flows to descend to the base of the Caliente and La Mitad domes. During 6-8 June, many weak to moderate explosions sending gas-and-ash plumes up to ~1.5 km above the summit of the Caliente dome were recorded, along with some avalanches and collapses on the flanks. Moderate lahars descended the Nimá Segundo river and San Isidro ravine on 1 and 6 June, respectively.

Report for Semeru
An ash plume from Semeru was reported on 4 June at ~4.5 km a.s.l.

Report for Sheveluch
Between 28 May and 4 June, seismic activity at Shiveluch was above background levels with many shallow earthquakes recorded. Continuous spasmodic tremor was recorded during 27-29 May with an increase in volcanic seismicity beginning on 29 May and continuing through 2 June. On 31 May a possible gas-and-ash plume rose to 5.5 km a.s.l. and on 27-28 May gas-and-steam plumes were observed rising up to ~2.5 km a.s.l. and drifting E. A small lava flow on top of the active dome, first observed on 21 May, continued to flow until 28 May. Shiveluch remained at Concern Color Code Orange.

Report for Soufriere Hills
During 28 May to 4 June, activity at Soufrière Hills remained low with four hybrid and 16 mixed earthquakes recorded. Sulfur-dioxide emissions fluctuated but remained low.

Report for Suwanosejima
On 7 June Suwanose-jima erupted, producing a plume to ~2 km a.s.l. that extended E. Eruptions continued through 8 June with at least one explosion producing a gas-and-ash plume to ~2 km a.s.l. that also drifted E.

Report for Tungurahua
During 2-8 June, activity remained at a moderate level at Tungurahu with several weak to moderate explosions recorded per day. Sporadically observed gas-and-ash and gas-and-steam plumes rose up to 1 km above the summit. A strong explosion on 5 June produced a gas-and-ash plume that rose 2 km above the summit. All plumes drifted W. Seismicity remained at moderate levels for the reporting week. On 3 June, possible lahars were noted on the N and NW flanks.

Report for Ulawun
On 6 June, satellite imagery of Ulawun showed a plume up to 3 km a.s.l. and extending ~75 km NW.
