Weekly Volcanic Activity Map

The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is a cooperative project between the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program and the US Geological Survey's Volcano Hazards Program. Updated by 2300 UTC every Wednesday and averaging 16 reported volcanoes, this is not a comprehensive list of all eruptions this week, but rather a summary of activity that meet criteria discussed in the "Criteria and Disclaimers" section below.

Volcanic activity reported here is preliminary and subject to change. Carefully reviewed, detailed narratives over longer time periods are published as reports of the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network available through volcano profile pages.

The RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed is identical to the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report minus some features including the header information (latitude and longitude and summit elevation), the Geologic Summary, and a link to the volcano's page from the Global Volcanism Program. At the end of each report is a list of the sources used. Each volcano report includes a link from the volcano's name back to the more complete information in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report on the Smithsonian website. This feature was first made available on 5 March 2008.

A Google Earth network link for the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report can be loaded into the free Google Earth software, and in turn will load placemarks for volcanoes in the current weekly report. Placemark balloons include the volcano name, report date, report text, sources, and links back to the GVP volcano profile page and to the complete Weekly Report for that week. This feature was first made available on 1 April 2009.

Criteria



The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report does not necessarily include all volcanic activity that occurred on Earth during the week. More than a dozen volcanoes globally have displayed more-or-less continuous eruptive activity for decades or longer, and such routine activity is typically not reported here. Moreover, Earth's sea-floor volcanism is seldom reported even though in theory it represents the single most prolific source of erupted material. The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report summarizes volcanic activity that meets one or more of the following criteria:

- A volcano observatory raises or lowers the alert level at the volcano.
- A volcanic ash advisory has been released by a volcanic ash advisory center (VAAC) stating that an ash cloud has been produced from the volcano.
- A verifiable news report of new activity or a change in activity at the volcano has been issued.
- Observers have reported a significant change in volcanic activity. Such activity can include, but is not restricted to, pyroclastic flows, lahars, lava flows, dome collapse, or increased unrest.

Volcanoes are included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section of the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report if the activity occurs after at least 3 months of quiescence. Once a volcano is included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section, updates will remain in that section unless the activity continues for more than 1 month without escalating, after which time updates will be listed in the "Continuing Activity" section. Volcanoes are also included in the "New Activity/Unrest" section if the volcano is undergoing a period of relatively high unrest, or increasing unrest. This is commonly equal to Alert Level Orange on a scale of Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, where Red is the highest alert. Or alert level 3 on a scale of 1-4 or 1-5.

It is important to note that volcanic activity meeting one or more of these criteria may occur during the week, but may not be included in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report because we did not receive a report.

1. The Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is intended to provide timely information about global volcanism on a weekly basis. Consequently, the report is generated rapidly by summarizing volcanic reports from various sources, with little time for fact checking. The accuracy of the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is dependent upon the quality of the volcanic activity reports we receive. Reports published in the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network are cover longer time periods and are more carefully reviewed, although all of the volcanoes discussed in the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report are not necessarily reported in the Bulletin. Because of our emphasis on rapid reporting on the web we have avoided diacritical marks. Reports are updated on the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report web page as they are received, therefore information may be included regarding events that occurred before the current report period.

2. Rapidly developing events lead to coverage that is often fragmentary. Volcanoes, their eruptions, and their plumes and associated atmospheric effects are complex phenomena that may require months to years of data analysis in order to create a comprehensive summary and interpretation of events.

3. Preliminary accounts sometimes contain exaggerations and "false alarms," and accordingly, this report may include some events ultimately found to be erroneous or misleading.

4. Many news agencies do not archive the articles they post on the Internet, and therefore the links to some sources may not be active. To obtain information about the cited articles that are no longer available on the Internet contact the source.

Report for Colima
The largest eruption at Colima since 1999 occurred on 23 May at 1910. The eruption produced a plume that rose to ~5.8 km above the volcano (~31,700 ft a.s.l.) and drifted W. Pyroclastic flows traveled 4-5 km, mainly down San Antonio (SSW) and Monte Grande (SSE) ravines. Ash plumes rising above the pyroclastic flow drifted E.

Report for Galeras
According to a news article, on 24 May the Colombian government ordered the evacuation of ~9,000 people living near Galeras due to an increase in volcanic activity. INGEOMINAS reported that during 16-23 May, small shallow earthquakes occurred beneath the volcano. There was an increase in earthquakes associated with fracturing within the volcano during the night of 21 May to the morning of 22 May. Gas emissions slightly decreased on 17 and 20 May in comparison to 29 April and 2 May, and slightly increased around 23 May. Deformation continued to be recorded at the volcano's summit. There were no ash emissions. Galeras remained at Alert Level 2 (probable eruption in terms of days or weeks) as it has since 19 April 2005.

Report for Anatahan
During 18-20 May volcanic tremor beneath Anatahan increased, peaking on the 20th. Afterwards, the tremor steadily declined through 23 May. Satellite imagery showed that emitted ash propagated to a maximum height of 3 km (10,000 ft) a.s.l.

Report for Dukono
Satellite data showed thin ash plumes from Dukono on 21 May. The height of the plumes was not reported.

Report for Fuego
During 17-20 May, lava flows continued to travel down Fuego's flanks, extending ~400 m W and ~500 m SW of the summit. Short avalanches originated from the lava-flow fronts. Also, explosions sent ash and incandescent volcanic material to low altitudes.

Report for Kanlaon
Phreatic activity continued at Canlaon during 18-23 May, with ash-and-steam plumes rising to ~1 km above the volcano (~11,300 ft a.s.l.). This activity was not recorded in seismic data. The sulfur-dioxide flux on 22 May was at ~2,080 metric tons per day, much higher than the normal flux of 500 metric tons per day. Canlaon remained at Alert Level 1, with a 4-km Permanent Danger Zone around the summit off limits to visitors.

Report for Karymsky
During 13-20 May, seismic activity and the height of ash explosions increased at Karymsky in comparison to the previous week. Ash-and-gas plumes rose to ~3.5 km above the crater (16,500 ft a.s.l.) and fresh ash deposits were present on the W and E sectors of the volcano. A thermal anomaly continued to be visible on satellite imagery. Karymsky remained at Concern Color Code Orange.

Report for Kilauea
On 18 May lava from Kilauea continued to enter the sea at three areas. Surface lava flows were visible on the coastal plain and on the Pulama pali fault scarp. Volcanic tremor remained above background levels at Kilauea’s summit and at moderate levels at Pu`u `O`o.

Report for Krakatau
An increase in seismic activity at Krakatau around 16 May prompted DVGHM to raise the Alert Level at the volcano from 1 to 2 (on a scale of 1-4) on the 16th.

Report for Pacaya
Incandescent lava was ejected ~50 m from Pacaya's crater on 17 May and an intra-crater lava flow extended ~300 m from the SW base of the central cone. On 20 May a thin plume rose ~500 m above the volcano's crater (~10,000 ft a.s.l.).

Report for Reventador
Based on information from IG, the Washington VAAC reported that an eruption at Reventador on 19 May around 0900 produced a NW-drifting ash plume to 3.7-4.9 km (12,000-16,000 ft) a.s.l. Ash was not visible on satellite imagery due to meteorological clouds near the volcano.

Report for Santa Maria
Constant avalanches occurred from lava-flow fronts on the SW flank of Santa Maria's Santiaguito lava-dome complex on 17 May. Explosions during 17-20 May produced ash clouds to a height of ~1 km above the volcano (15,700 ft a.s.l.); ash fell 7-10 km from Caliente Dome.

Report for Semeru
Satellite imagery on 21 May showed a thin plume from Semeru at a height of ~4.6 km (~15,000 ft) a.s.l. extending to the S and later SSE.

Report for Sheveluch
No explosive events were recorded at Shiveluch during 13-20 May, however, gas-and-steam plumes rose as high as 1.2 km above the lava dome (12,100 ft. a.s.l.). Satellite imagery showed a persistent thermal anomaly at the lava dome. Shiveluch remained at Concern Color Code Orange.

Report for Soufriere Hills
During 13-20 May, the seismic network at Soufrière Hills recorded 18 volcano-tectonic earthquakes (most occurred on 17 May) and 3 hybrid earthquakes. Steam venting that began on the NW side of the crater on 15 April continued. The daily recorded sulfur-dioxide flux varied from a low of 222 metric tons per day (t/d) on 16 May to a maximum of 363 t/d on 14 May, with an average of 286 t/d. This was below the eruption's long-term average of 500 t/d.

Report for St. Helens
During 18-24 May, growth of the new lava dome inside the crater of Mount St. Helens continued, accompanied by low rates of seismicity, low emissions of steam and volcanic gases, and minor production of ash. Seismicity and ground deformation continued at rates similar to those of the previous few weeks. St. Helens remained at Volcano Advisory (Alert Level 2); aviation color code Orange.

Report for Tungurahua
Volcanic and seismic activity remained at relatively low levels at Tungurahua during 18-23 May, with mainly emissions of steam and gas. On 19 May around 1200 an emission produced an ash-and-steam plume to a height of ~500 m (18,100 ft a.s.l.) that drifted N.

Satellite imagery on 19 May showed a small plume from Ulawun at an unknown height extending W.
