When magma or lava and water interact the result can be explosive if the conditions are right. The water can be in underground aquifers, crater lakes, oceans, lakes, rivers, or melting snow and ice. When water flashes to steam the volume increase is around 1000 times, resulting in an explosive reaction. Hazards include ballistic ejecta, explosive jets (cock’s-tail plumes), volcanic ash, volcanic gas, pyroclastic surge, tsunami.
